Progression Not Perfection

A MEDITATION THAT CELEBRATES REAL SUCCESS

I’m at a bit of a crossroads in my life at the moment. I’m in my seventh year of meditation practice and whether or not my friends and family have noticed, I actually feel like a completely different person to who I was back then. I feel very different to who I was even 12 months ago. So I’m finding myself evaluating whether certain things in my life still ‘fit’ like they used to. We’ll see!

But in the meantime, it’s nice to just stop and smile at our progress; our growth – whatever that looks like. xx

The idea that there is a precise formula to meditation that will guarantee results or pleasant experiences, or relieve us of all our anger and anxiety, is just another thing we need to learn to let go.

Sure, there’s technique, and at its most basic is observing the breath, but like a musician who practices violin every day, some days the sound is clunky and out of tune and other days the sweetest melody flows out as if all on its own.

But those days of tuneless frustration are just as valid. Because for the life work of a musician, what really matters is progression, not perfection.

And it’s the same in meditation.

Sometimes thoughts settle in an instant and we feel sensual waves of calm lap over us. And other times we can’t stop yawning as fatigue drags us down.

But whatever the experience, we are progressing. And that’s what this meditation is about.

MEDITATION

With every breath, with every minute, we are moving along on a path of knowing ourselves and knowing others.

Of knowing something different, something real. About what it means to be living this one temporary life.

Of letting go of what we’re told – and embracing and trusting what we are learning for ourselves.

And this progress is by no means linear. It’s one big, beautiful mess.

There are setbacks and doubt. Incredible experiences, and ones where we’d prefer to crawl right out of our bodies.

And that’s where the perfection lies. In understanding that life, too, is a series of ups and downs, successes and failures, joys and sorrows. And to be truly alive is to be present for all of it.

So, as you sit in meditation, whatever that looks like, give yourself a grin for this incremental gain.

For your progress; your evolution; your journey.

And enjoy every breath of the way.
