Difficult Emotions

OK

A MEDITATION ON TOUGH TIMES

Lately I’ve been talking to myself more and more. And no, it’s not because I’m hearing voices! It’s an intentional (albeit one-way) conversation with myself to talk Negative Nancy down off her ledge and instil some kind of rational calm in there.

Change is in the air in our household and it’s certainly making its presence felt.

At the moment it’s “good” change and I’m grateful for that but this monkey mind doesn’t seem to distinguish one kind of change from another.

So here’s the mental pep talk I’ve been giving myself, letting Negative Nancy know she can chill right out; for now anyway.

xx

Everything is going to be OK.

Even if it doesn’t feel like it.

There may not be any space lately to think anything positive at all. Mind consumed with ifs, whats and maybes.

But go on. Say it to yourself now.

It’s going to be OK.

Even if you don’t mean it.

Say it anyway. Either gently like a whisper or, forcefully out loud. However you’re feeling it.

Everything’s going to be OK.

I’m going to be OK.

He or she is going to be OK.

They’re going to be OK.

It doesn’t have to be amazing. It doesn’t even have to be good. It can be just OK. And that’s fine for now.

Despite your loneliness, troubles, fear or grief, you are going to be OK.

Even if the worst of what you predict comes true, you are still going to be OK.

Say it to yourself.

I’m going to be OK.

Everything is going to be OK.

I’m happy, even though all of this is going on.

I’m at peace, even though all of this is going on.

MEDITATION

For the remainder of the meditation, continue resting in this little corner of space that we’ve created, to breathe into the knowing that everything is going to work out.

Breathing in and breathing out.

It’s going to be OK.

Inhaling and exhaling.

Everything’s going to be OK.

Just sitting here connecting with your breath like a trusted old friend.

I’m going to be OK.

Giving yourself a mental squeeze and a warm smile.

It’s all going to be OK.

Promise.
